Drying Clothes Indoors in a Small Flat: What Actually Works

If your washing takes three days to dry and the whole flat smells faintly damp while it does, you're not doing anything wrong. Most UK flats have no garden, no tumble dryer and no utility room, so the airer ends up in the living room from October to March. A few changes to when, where and how you dry can make loads dry faster and keep the moisture off your walls.

Start in the washing machine

The less water your clothes hold when they come out, the faster they dry and the less moisture ends up in the air. Use the highest spin speed the fabric allows. Most machines let you add an extra spin on its own, which is worth doing for towels, jeans and jumpers. Give each item a good shake before you hang it to loosen creases and open up the fibres.

Wash smaller loads more often in winter rather than one huge load at the weekend. A full airer packed tight dries slowly because air can't get between the clothes.

Pick one drying room and stick to it

The worst approach in a small flat is spreading wet washing across every room. Instead, choose one room, usually the bathroom or a spare bedroom, and dry everything there. Keep the door shut so the moisture stays in, and either open the window a crack or run the extractor if it's the bathroom.

Avoid the bedroom you sleep in if you can, and keep washing out of the kitchen while you're cooking, when there's already plenty of steam.

Use a dehumidifier to do the heavy lifting

If there's one thing that changes indoor drying in a small home, it's a dehumidifier in the drying room. It pulls water out of the air before it can settle on windows and walls, which helps clothes dry faster and helps reduce condensation. A compact one suits a box room or bathroom. Empty the tank every day, as it fills quickly when there's a full load drying.

Space, not heat, is what dries clothes

It's tempting to drape everything over the radiators. It does dry things quickly, but it pushes all that water straight into the air, stops the radiator heating the room and can leave marks on clothes. Air flowing around each item matters more than direct heat.

Slim hangers mean you can hang more on a single rail without crowding it.

Use the bath and the back of the door

In most small flats, the bath is the best drying spot you have. Water drips straight into it, the extractor is right there and the door shuts. A no-drill tension pole across the bath or shower gives you an extra hanging rail for shirts on hangers. Check the weight it takes and keep it to lighter items.

Doors are free hanging space too. Over-door hooks let you hang a couple of shirts or a towel without fixings, and adhesive hooks on tiles give you a spot for smaller items.

Give towels their own spot

Towels are thick, slow to dry and used every day, so they take up a lot of the airer. Giving them a separate rail in the bathroom frees the airer for clothes and stops damp towels piling up in the bedroom.

Don't let damp washing sit around

Musty-smelling clothes usually come from washing left sitting damp, either in the machine or in a basket. Hang it out as soon as the cycle finishes. If you can't, put the machine on a delayed start so it finishes when you're home. A slim basket you empty often is better than a big hamper that stays full.

Quick answers

Is it bad to dry clothes on radiators?

It dries clothes quickly but puts a lot of moisture into the room and stops the radiator heating the space properly. An airer near the radiator with good airflow is usually a better option.

How can I make clothes dry faster indoors?

Use a high spin, leave space between items, hang shirts on hangers and dry everything in one room with a dehumidifier or an open window. Turning thick items halfway through helps too.

Why do my clothes smell musty after drying indoors?

Usually because they took too long to dry or sat damp in the machine or basket. Hang washing straight away, dry smaller loads and keep air moving around the airer.
